Utility Surveying

Utility Surveying

Imagine project planning that significantly minimises risk and intern saves money, knowing exactly where expensive fibre optics or even dangerous HIGH VOLTAGE cables lay on your site prior to excavation…

What is utility mapping?

Utility mapping surveys provide critical information on below ground conditions, clearly showing all manner of obstacles (utilities, voids, foundations etc), their depth, position and type. What’s more, this can usually be achieved without disturbing the ground and with minimal disruption to the public or other site workers.
From power, gas, water and telecoms to fibre-optics, drainage and sewers, our survey teams pick up all services in accordance with BSIPAS 128, the current British Standard for underground utility detection from an initial desktop study and site reconnaissance to the detection and physical verification phases, our team enforce best practice throughout the entire project.

Land Surveying

Land Surveying

With rapid response times, continuous investment in both technology and training as well as significant experience performing all types of topographic surveys, Subsurface Detection’s land surveyors are regularly commissioned to deliver high-accuracy surveys to all manner of clients.

Fieldwork

From remotely operated survey drones and 3D laser scanners to robotic total stations and GPS receivers, our projects managers carefully select the ideal tools to collect your survey data in the quickest, most accurate and cost-effective way possible.
Whilst the majority of topographic surveys can be carried out using more conventional survey equipment, many larger or longer projects can be completed much more quickly by using on of our cutting edge aerial survey drones.
Large jobs that may once have taken weeks can now be completed in a fraction of the time with a week of traditional on-site data collection frequently being completed in just one day. Not only does this mean dramatically improved delivery times, it also means reduced risk to survey teams, especially in safety critical environments.
Regardless of the equipment used, our survey teams exercise best practice at all stages of the project, operating with professionalism, courtesy and respect for the public and other stakeholders.

Deliverables

With fieldwork completed and results checked, all data is then transmitted to our head office where our highly experienced processing teams begin turning it into a series of precision drawings. From DWG to PDF and three-dimensional BIM models, surveys can be provided in any file type and in both digital and hard-copy forms.

Laser Scanning

Laser Scanning

At the forefront of 3D modelling, our professional laser scanning survey teams produce three-dimensional building and structure models that deliver previously unimaginable levels of information, detail and accuracy.

From three-dimensional surveys of structures and BIM models to 3D walk-throughs and visual impact assessments, our laser scanning services are delivered efficiently, on time and on budget with deliverables (2D, 3D or BIM) being tailored to suit each client’s requirements.

Topographic surveys. elevations, sections, 3D and TIN models are just some of the products that can be derived from the cloud. All line work is produced meticulously in AutoCAD format with the end result being an incredibly accurate, flawless product. The precision and value of these scans cannot be overstated.

Concrete Scanning

Concrete scanning

Using high frequency ground penetrating radar we are able to interrogate structures or material layers in concrete.

What is concrete scanning?

Anomalies within structures or carriageways can be highlighted using high frequency radar data. This technique can be applied to many situations including: Reinforced Concrete Slabs, Bridge Decks or Structures, Carriageway Construction Layers, Reinstatement Checking for Specification Compliance, Chimney Flue Detection with Party Walls, Airport Runway Condition Analysis.
We can provide you with:-

  • Radar images of the structure/carriageway
  • Detailed CAD drawings of the interpreted data
  • Written reports

Vacuum Excavation

Vacuum excavation

At the forefront of safe excavating techniques and to complement our utility survey solutions further, Subsurface Detection offer a vacuum excavation service. This technology provides a non-destructive solution for visual inspection of the exact positions of buried services.

What is Vacuum Excavation?

The Vacuum excavator is a safe technique to expose the position of underground services with jet air or water to loosen the soils. After the soil and materials are loosened, they are extracted through a high power suction hose into the spoil/debris tank which is later used for backfilling or disposal.

Vacuum excavation provides a verification process for exposing utilities to determine their type, depth, size and

WHY USE US

Subsurface Detection provide high resolution, high accuracy subsurface survey information to reduce risk and maximize profit for our customers. Our non-destructive solutions reduce risk during tendering and delivery, optimize engineering designs and assist in finding and defining resources

“The safest, most cost efficient utility surveying, mapping and excavation solutions available to utility professionals.”

“In a project context, missing, inaccurate or outdated utility information can lead to delays, conflicts, and interruptions in service inevitably creating uncalculated project over-cost. In a human context, however, inadequate information can lead to serious injury or even death”.

BENEFITS

Benefits of SUE

A properly planned and executed SUE investigation provides many benefits to the project owner including fewer project delays and lower overall project costs. Having reliable utility information allows the project designers to make informed decisions resulting in the following potential benefits:

1 Reduced project delays and costs caused by waiting for utility relocation work to be completed;

2 Reduced project delays and costs caused by waiting for redesign when construction cannot follow the original design due to unexpected utility conflicts;

3 Reduced delays to contractors during construction caused by damaging or discovering utility lines that were not known to be present in the project area;

4 Reduced number of conflicts and relocations because the designer has the ability to design around utilities when feasible.

Three different studies have been carried out to investigate the benefits of using SUE investigation at the design stage of construction projects.
Read more about these studies in the SUE studies section

The Benefits from obtaining accurate information prior to work commencing on site or, during any project are:

  • Detect underground utilities before you dig
  • Improve site safety and reduce risk of injury to personnel
  • Reduce costly delays ensuring project remains on schedule
  • Have a clear knowledge of where utility runs are and which areas are highly congested
